Projects / Community Art Lab

Community Art Lab (CAL) is an initiative of the city and province of Utrecht established in 2005. Its main aim is to document and analyze ongoing community art projects across all artistic disciplines, and to develop new work in areas in which current practice is lacking. CAL organizes festivals, symposia and workshops, but its main work is in the field. Currently CAL is developing a database of all ongoing community art projects in the Netherlands and conducts in-depth research on nine separate projects in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Haarlem and Eindhoven. CAL also tries to stay abreast of community art (and theory) elsewhere in the world. For that purpose it maintains contact with numerous companies around the world. Furthermore, CAL is developing close partnerships with the East Midlands Participatory Arts Forum (EMPAF), The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, the Social Arts Network (UK), the Swedish Community Theatre Society, and with individual researchers like François Matarasso (UK) and Rustom Bharucha (Calcutta, India). In Utrecht, CAL is also looking for ways to combine sociological with arts research.
