International Lecture and Seminars Series

The International Lecture and Seminar Series are a joint effort of the TF Theatre Festival and Theatre Studies, and integral part of the MA Theatre Studies program, presenting lectures and seminar session with prominent guests from the international field.

2011 - Not ‘Just Theatre’

Guests: Researchers Helen Freshwater (Birkbeck College, London) and Branislav Jakovljevic (Stanford University, USA) and economist / theatre director Bojan Jablanovec (Via Negativa, Slovenia).

Not 'Just Theatre' critically engages with the complex relationships between theatrical staging and the performativity of real life. Something that is staged is easily rejected as 'just theatre'. This program aims for moving beyond such superficial label and explores what is actually at stake with regard to the performative turn of society and personal life.

2010 - Theatre beyond the Human?

Guests: Alan Read (King's College London), Sally Jane Norman (Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts) and Jon McKenzie (University of Wisconsin-Madison).
The history of Western theatre is closely connected to a world view that grants a central position to human beings. Theatre engages with and gives expression to the questions humans find themselves confronted with, their inner and outer struggles, their doubts and convictions. Contemporary developments within the theatre and outside question this central position of human beings as the center of the universe, and the human perspective as the central concern of theatre. Our three guests will all engage with thinking theatre beyond the human.

Lecture titles:

Prof. Alan Read: "Immunity from the Prosecutions of Performance"

Prof. Jon McKenzie: "Misperformance and the Posthuman"
Prof. Sally Jane Norman: "Staging the Other"
